Balance Type

The balance type is an elementThe representation of a financial reporting concept, including: line items in the face of the financial statements, important narrative disclosures, and rows and columns in tables. attribute, so it cannot be changed. If the balance type is incorrect, the element may need to be changed to a different one or extended. See Common EFM References.

Possible values for the balance type are:

  • debit
  • credit
  • na (uncommon) - This applies to total elements such as the "Net cash provided" total element used in the Statement of Cash Flows.

Instance Document Value

This is the actual value that is included in the instance document. The value will be positive, negative, or zero. This value and/or the sign on this value can be changed. The sign on the value is affected by the sign in the document, as well as the whether or not the Reverse Sign option is selected.

Instance Document Balance Type

The Balance Type of the selected element combined with the sign on the value determines whether the Instance DocumentAn XML file that conforms to one or more XBRL taxonomies and contains the data in a business report. Balance Type is a debit or a credit. You have the ability to change whether a value is a debit or a credit because you have the ability to affect the sign on a value.
