Show Formatting Marks

To make formatting in Microsoft Word easier, turn on the display of formatting marks (also referred to as non-printing characters).

On the Home ribbon, click the pilcrow icon ¶ to toggle on or off Show/ Hide Formatting Marks, or press Ctrl+*.

Common Symbols

Symbol		Meaning
Dot	·	Space
Pilcrow	¶	Paragraph mark or "hard return" at the end of a paragraph
Degree symbol	°	Non-breaking space
Arrow		Tab character
Return symbol		Carriage return or "soft return" which breaks the line without starting a new paragraph
Square (in margin)		Indicates one or more settings in Paragraph > Line and Page Breaks are used
