Table Banding Troubleshooting

Common table banding issues and resolutions are described below. For initial banding set-up, see Table Banding.

Updating Linked Table Removes Banding

By default, updating a table CrossLink clears the blue and white row shading of table banding as the formatting updates to match Excel. However, since the Start Banding marker is still in place, the banding can be easily reapplied using Band Current Table or Band All Tables. See Table Banding.

To save time re-applying the banding after updating links, you can change the setting on the tables from the default Source formatting to Destination formatting. Destination formatting allows table banding (and other formatting applied on the Word surface) to stay in place as the content updates.

If a structural change is made to the table (adding or removing rows or columns), the table will revert to the Excel formatting for only the next update.  Reapply banding and other formatting on the Word surface. See Source/Destination Formatting.

Band Current Table is Grayed Out

See Tables Not Banding.

Band Current Table Does Not Apply Blue Shading

See Tables Not Banding.

Banding Starts on the Wrong Row

If the first blue row is too high or too low, see Move Start Banding Row.

Band All Tables Skips Tables

If some tables are not banded using the Band All Tables function:

  • For the tables that are not banded, try to band them individually using Band Current Table. For troubleshooting on the individual table level, see Tables Not Banding.
  • Ensure that all tables in the report are within report sections.

Custom Banding Colors and Column Banding

To set up stylized banding, such as using custom colors or banding by columns instead of rows, apply the shading to the tables in Excel rather than using the table banding feature. Include an unmerged row with no shading at the top of each named range to prevent the shading from showing in the defining row at the top of the table in Word.
